MILITARY BIO:
Leslie Laman Woodcock was living in Harrison Co., MS, when he enlisted in the US Army Feb. 21, 1941 at Camp Shelby, MS. His serial number was 34018623. His enlistment papers indicate that he had grammar schooling and that he was single. He joined the 455th AAA Bn., after the unit was formed in Sept. 1942. The 455th AAA trained at Camp Stewart and Ft. Benning, Ga., then went overseas to Norfolk, England in Sept. 1943. Leslie was in Battery 'A' of the 455th AAA Bn. ...The Battery was located at a B-17 bomber airbase at Snetterton Heath, Norfolk, England... In July 1944, the 455th AAA went to France for 'Operation Cobra', as part of Patton's 3rd Army, Walker's XX Corps. They later went into Germany and Austria and returned home in October 1945. Leslie was a crewman on gun crew #4 of 'A' Battery, and his existing photos in the unit show him on the quad .50-cal. machine gun of that crew. The 455th shotdown/damaged over 130 German aircraft, and became the second highest-scoring antiaircraft unit in Patton's 3rd Army.
