Rev. F.J. Altman Claimed by Death

The Rev. Francis J. Altman, S.J., 74, president of Gonzaga University from 1942-45, died in a hospital here today.

For several years he had lived in Jesuit House at Gonzaga, where he was professor emeritus of mathematics.

After serving as Gonzaga president from 1942-45 he went to Mount Saint Michael’s Graduate School, northeast of Hillyard, where he was in charge of the physics program and directed the installation of a new seismographs.

He was born in Spokane, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Altman, and attended Gonzaga High School and University before entering the society of Jesus at Los Gatos, California, in 1913.

From 1918-21 he studied philosophy at Mount Saint Michael’s and then taught at Loyola University, Los Angeles. He held master’s degrees in both arts and science and in 1924 he was assigned to study theology for four years at Gregorian University, Rome, and at Milltown Park Jesuit Studies Center, Ireland.

He did graduate work in philosophy at Mount Saint Michael’s in 1928 and went from there to the University of Washington where he did advanced work from 1932-36. Since 1959 he had been professor of mathematics at Gonzaga. He celebrated his Golden Jubilee mass, in recognition of 50 years in the Society of Jesus, in July, 1963, and was honored by Jesuits and laymen from many parts of the country.

Surviving are three sisters, Sister Francis Anthony, St. Joseph’s Nursing Home; Sister Mary Barbara Clare, Holy Names Academy, and Mrs. Theresa Wieman, Seattle.
