Born in Tippecanoe county, he farmed in the Round Grove community before moving to Oxford in 1950. He was a member of Badger Grove Baptist church, Masonic lodge at Crothersville and Modern Woodmen at Octagon.
In 1902 he married Gertrude Morehouse who died in 1918.
He married Lueverna Gillen, in 1921, and she survives with three daughters, Mrs. Marie Huchinson of Acton, Mrs. Ruth Gillespie of Beech Grove, and Mrs. Wilma Baker of Lafayette; three sons, Kenneth Rawles of Russiaville, Paul F. Rawles, at home, and Merle E. Rawles of Oxford: and one sister, Mrs. Florence Combs of San Diego, Calif.
