The death of Captain Orrin Kellogg occurred in Portland last week. He was 79 years old. Funeral services were held in that city Monday. Captain Kellogg was one of the pioneer steamboat men of the Pacific Northwest. During the late 80's and in the 90's he operated a line of boats from Portland to Toledo, which for years gave the Cowlitz Valley town its claim to being head of navigation on the Cowlitz River. Hundreds of tons of grain, hay and other farm products of the Cowlitz Valley and country tributary for years found its market in Portland by shipment over boats on the Kellogg line. All the old timers down that way who had a personal acquaintance with Captain Kellogg will be interested in learning of the death of this historic character who had much to do with the pioneer transportation history of southern Lewis County.
