John was the son of John DeWitt (1823-Oct 1849) and Mary Romaine (1825-Oct 1848) who both died soon after his birth.

As a result, John lived with his grandparents (Thomas DeWitt (1791-1879) and Magdalene Buffington (1797-1886).

He had three siblings:
1) Julia Ann (1843-1843),
2) James Dallas (1845-1924), and
3) Virginia (De LaGrange) (1846-1919).

He lived with brother James in the homestead near Muses Bottom, Jackson Co, WV his entire life as far as census records reveal. He did not appear in the 1930 census so he may have died prior to the date of the census collection.

The only other male DeWitt descendant who lived in WV longer was Wade DeWitt (who died in 1960), who was a son of Theodore, a grandson of Alexander, and a great grandson of Thomas Dewitt.

Apparently, John Calvin Dewitt never married.

In 1924 John C. DeWitt & J. D. DeWitt sold 167.5 acres to J. O. Boggs which was all the remaining family farmland except the graveyard. [Jackson, 102-109] Thus ended the 100+ year DeWitt presence on that land beginning in 1807 when John Witt DeWitt (1759-1820) built the first cabin in the area.

There does not seem to be a grave marker for John Calvin DeWitt or his brother Dallas. However they are listed as buried here according to various Jackson Co, WV records. John may have been the last person to be buried in this cemetery.

Other surviving male DeWitts lived in Missouri, Michigan and California.

Final note:
Be sure to read the description attached to the images of a postcard sent to JC Dewitt by SS Ball. It is a tiny glimpse into the life along the Ohio River over 100 years ago.
