Civil War Veteran and Sheriff of Maricopa County


Lindley H. Orme served 4 years as sheriff with a 10-year break in between his 2nd & 3rd terms. Orme built the first Phoenix jail with incandescent lamps. During Sheriff Orme's term, repeated smallpox outbreaks required deputies to quarantine the town. He was a member of the Territorial Council which secured the removal of the Capital from Prescott to Phoenix.

The funeral of Mr. L.H. Orme will be held at Trinity Episcopal church this morning at 10:30 o'clock, Rev. E.A. Penich officiating in the religious services. Mr. Orme was a member of Phoenix lodge No.2, I.O.O.F, and Phoenix lodge No.335, B.P.O.E., and both lodges will turn out in a body to escort the remains to the cemetery, where their ritualistic funeral services will be performed. In view of the official services rendered in behalf of the this county by Mr. Orme during his long residence, the court house officials yesterday placed the flag at half mast above the building in respect to his memory and as a token of the high esteem in which he was held. ~ provided by: dm wms
