Duane and his wife Florence raised their eight children in a two room house on the farm that his father, Levi Staley helped him buy, near Perry Iowa. After his wife died in 1938, Duane married the housekeeper that he had hired to take care of the children.
Because of his health he was told to move to a drier climate. He moved his family to Coaldale, Colorado. They had only farmed there for a couple of years before returning to Iowa. Duane retired to Salida, Colorado and worked in the "D" Street Greenhouse until his death from Lung Cancer in 1974.
