Son of Charles Benjamin and Sylvia Cooke (Bass) Harrison. His farm along Sturgeon Creek and Lloyd's Run in the Dolphin area of Brunswick County, was part of family land passed down through the generations from his great grandfather Gabriel Harrison. Smith lost two wives in six years and his two oldest sons to the Civil War, which plunged him into depression. He died from a single gunshot wound while hunting alone on his property. Rumour was that he took his own life.
