She was an English teacher and taught in Hopewell and Paterson, N.J. She chose not to marry.
Grace was a well-regarded teacher and was known as a very kind and good person. A poem she wrote is very telling:
The Evening Star
I'd been standing on a hill-top,
I had seen the sun sink low,
I had watched the dusky shadows
Gather o'er the scene below.
Then I looked into the heavens
And saw gazing from afar
One single ray of yellow light--
The light of the evening star.
As I watched it from the hill-top
And the shadows darker grew,
The bright light in the heavens
Grew to a still brighter hue.
So it is with many a person,
Who, through cold and dreary strife
For the right, shows forth the beauty
Of a good and noble life.
Let us all, when trial or sorrow
Comes with us our life to share,
Shine more brightly in the darkness
Than when the light was there.
