Death of John Malven

The death of John Malven, a resident of this county for fifty years and of
this city for nearly eighteen years, occurred Thursday, February 6th, at
his home on Main street. Mr. Malven was seventy-three years of age, his
birth being on May 24th, 1835 at Strondsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1850 he
moved to this county and eight years later was married to Miss Mary C.
Hubbard, two sons being born to them. Later, in 1868, he was married to
Mrs. Harriet L. Martin who, with six children survive him. Mr. Malven
served through the Civil War as a member of the 5th Iowa Infantry and 7th
Iowa Cavalry. In private life his duties were as deputy sheriff for six
years under G. H. Odell and again for two years during the time R. W.
Fishel was county sheriff. Auctioneering was his business and in November
he was forced to remain at his home, and for the past few weeks was
critically ill. The services were in charge of the Rev. W. H. Ensign of
the First Presbyterian church, while an escort of the Militia, Company D,
attended the remains to the cemetery. The six children, J. W. and D. H.
Malven of this city, N. P. Malven of St. Paul, Mrs. Robert Allen of
Independence, Mrs. R. B. Davis of Newton, were present at the funeral, as
were Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Malven of Maynard, Mr. and Mrs. F. Wm Burbridge and
son of Oneida, Messrs F. H. and Fred Malven of Greeley and Mrs. S. W.
Crowley of Omaha.
