Historical Notes:
Albany County was formed in 1683.
Tryon County was formed in 1772 from lands then part of Albany County.
The settlement of German Flats is now known as Herkimer -- a mistake due to a survey & map error in 1778 that reversed the names of Herkimer and what is now the Town of German Flatts on the south bank of the Mohawk River.

Tryon County renamed Montgomery County in 1784, in honor of Revolutionary War General Montgomery -- and to expunge the name of the hated former British NY Governor Tryon.
Herkimer County formed from Montgomery County lands in 1791.
The US or USA did not exist prior to 1776.
New York was not a state before 1776, the lands now called New York State were then New York Province, one colony of thirteen that comprised the North American British Colonies.

Corporal Frederick Bellinger Sr. is an enlisted soldier of the American Revolutionary War.

DAR# A008848
Service: NY
Rank: Corporal
Birth: 11/12/1758 German Flatts, Tryon [then Albany County], NY
Death: 7/14/1833 Herkimer co., NY
Pension: *S12991
Service Source:
Service Description: Also served as Private Soldier in the New York Line Companies commanded by Captain Itting, Captain Frank, Captain Herden, Captain Gray, Captain Leffler, Captain Lipe, and Captain Gross.
Spouse: Magdalena Wohlenben

Additional military source: According to approved SAR #23255, service cited as follows:
1. Military service in Tryon County Militia prior to the Revolution under Captain George Herkimer [brother of General Nicholas Herkimer].
2. 1776-1778 - Service as Private & Corporal Enlisted Soldier. A Revolutionary War Veteran under Colonel Peter Bellinger's 4th Regiment, a unit of the Brigade of Militia of Tryon County, New York under General Nicholas Herkimer.
3. Nine months enlisted military service in the Colonel Christopher Yates Regiment.
4. Beginning 1780, 18 months enlisted military service with Colonel Mariumn Willett's Regiment.

Frederick's probable correct full name is Frederick Bellinger Sr. Not presently certain that this gallant Tryon County Militia & American Revolutionary War Veteran ever used the "Senior" suffix, but it is certain that his son Frederick Bellinger Junior used the "Jr." suffix (see Jr's gravestone). For clarity at a minimum, recommend Frederick Bellinger Sr. (the suffix "Sr.") be added to this FAG profile and to his several Ancestry.com family trees.

NOTE: DIFFERENCE IN DATES OF BIRTH AND DEATH

Strongly suspect Frederick Sr. 12 Nov 1752 DOB is the correct birth year. It is true that 1758 as Frederick's birth year appears in some documents (possibly in error), however his 1758 birth year is not supported by logic:

1. Fred's wife "Lany" was born in January 1753. Fred is a few months older with a 1752 year--and would be married at about age 15 with the 1758 year of birth.

2. First child Elizabeth birth year is 1774 (Fred & Lany's marriage at Frederick's age 14 or 15 is unlikely with the 1758 year of birth, especially since "Lany" would be age 19 or 20). Just seems not probable.

3. Approved SAR #23255 has the 12 Nov 1752 in a couple of spots, without any reference to 1758 year confusion; whereas, DAR #A008848 cited the Nov 1758 DOB.

4. Several Ancestry.com family trees have 1752 some have 1758 (is not an primary or even good secondary proof due to the nature of Ancestry "clicker" account holders) ... many clicking through their ancestry acceptance without much -- if any -- facts & backup supporting documents.

5. More date confusion: gravestone inscriptions are considered unreliable secondary sources – not primary sources – by genealogical authority. Frederick Sr.'s gravestone clearly reports he died aged 79 years, 4 months and 22 days. If correct, a calculation yields his DOB as 20 Feb 1754, and presents another more plausible date relative to the 1758 version.
