Joseph and Abigail married at South Hampton on September 5, 1780. Joseph was a soldier in 1776-77 and later he enlisted In the Continental Army. In the autumn of 1781, he built what was then called "Red" house on the road southeast of East Andover village. A part of the land remained in the family name over 120 years. Joseph built and gave to his son, Reuben, a house and 100 acres of land at the time of Reuben's marriage.
