James Edward Adair, son of Lewis O. and Floy Downing Adair, was born November 11, 1923, in Marceline, Missouri. He departed this life Saturday, April 4, 2009, in Christian Health Care South, in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of eighty-five years, four months, and twenty-three days.
On February 26, 1947, he was united in marriage to Hannah M. Bunch, and to this union one daughter and one son were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Stevan Adair; and a sister, Mary Armstrong.
James is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Hannah, of the home; a daughter, Stephanie Allen, and her husband, Jim, of Lebanon, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Melissa Bennett, Kevin Allen, Aaron Adair, Krystal Owen, Kurtis Allen, Amanda Adair, Lindie Adair, and Alec Adair; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Peggy Prose, of Russellville, Arkansas; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was born and raised in Marceline, Missouri, and graduated from Marceline High School. He entered the military as a young man, and served his country faithfully in the United States Army during World War II. He was very active in the Army band during that time. After being honorably discharged from the Army, James decided to pursue his passion for music and entered Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri, where he earned his Bachelor of Music Education Degree, and then received his Masters of Arts Degree from Truman State University. He traveled with the Glen Gray Band for a time and then began teaching band and choral music at Piggott, Arkansas. He soon returned to Marceline, Missouri, where he was the band director for several years before going into school administration and becoming the high school principal for a few years. The family then moved to Lebanon, Missouri, where James began working for Tenco Regional MaterialsCenter, eventually retiring as their director. He also had worked as a sports writer for the Lebanon Daily Record for several years.
James attended First United Methodist Church in Lebanon. He was a longtime member of the Lebanon Rotary Club where he was a past President. He loved music, was an accomplished saxophonist, and had played in Jerry Hoover's Jazz Band and the Old Timers Band. He also greatly enjoyed sports and was very supportive of the sports programs in the Lebanon Schools. His family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, and was a caring neighbor and friend. We celebrate his life and his accomplishments and will remember him as a devoted family man, a dedicated businessman, a patriotic citizen, a talented musician, and a good friend.
Services will be held at 2:00 om on Tuesday April 7, 2009 at the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon. Burial will be in Mt. Rose Memorial Park. Visitation is Monday evening 7-8:30 pm under the direction of the Holman-Howe Funeral Home Lebanon, Missouri.
A memorial has been established to the LHS Band or the LHS football program. Donations may be made through the funeral home.
