Major Harry Milford Brown was commander of the 96th Aero Squadron when it was organized on May 18, 1918. This squadron was the first in the United Air Service to have bombardment as its sole mission. The squadron was based at Amanty, France. The 96th staged its first operational raid on June 12, 1918. Major Brown and his observer led the flight and scored several hits on the railroad yards at Dommary-Baroncourt. On July 10, 1918, the 96th suffered a great loss when an entire flight of six Breguets, led by Major Brown, were forced down behind enemy lines. Brown and the eleven other men were captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs. He was discharged from the Army in 1920.
