Laura Anne "Sister Nellie" Rooney, 100, of Amarillo died Friday, July 11, 2003.
Prayer services will be at 7:30 p.m. today in St. Hyacinth's Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with Bishop J. Yanta, the Rev. Pat Carathers, Bishop L.T. Matthiesen and attending priests officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 S. Paramount Blvd.

Sister Nellie was born in Cheney, Neb. Upon learning about the needs of Catholic Education in the Diocese of Amarillo, she responded to God's call, joining the Franciscan Sisters on Oct. 30, 1936.

We praise and thank God for her life and for all she contributed to our community, the Diocese, the church, her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Theresa Rooney; two brothers, Jim and Neil Rooney; and a sister, Monica Burns.

Survivors include her religious community of Franciscan Sisters; a niece, Janeen Rooney Powers; six nephews, Neil Rooney Jr., Tom Burns, Pat Burns, Bob Burns, John Burns, Mike Burns and their families; and many grand-nephews, nieces and cousins.

The Franciscan Sisters suggest, in lieu of flowers, memorials be to Sister Nellie Rooney Education Fund at Our Lady of the Angels Convent, 8202 CR 7700, Wolfforth, TX 79382.
