George was listed as head of household in 1840 census along with Aaron Godfrey. Listed on tax record in Fayette County, Wilson Beat in 1860 along with Aaron Godfrey and Aaron Jr. George Washington & Louisa in the book of Civil War pensioners in Arkansas applied for pension 8-27-1895 shows Veteran # 2105 Co I 43 Rg Div Al 2 served between 1861-1863 when he was wounded near Mobile AL. He received a pension from 8-27-1895 until his death.
Louisa applied for widow pension on civil war pensioners 8-11-1908.
1870 Census shows them living in Lamar County Big Pond Post Office area age 36 a farmer owning real estate property valued at $800.00, Personal Property $250.00. Wife name Louisa, age 26 born in AL, son name Rufus A. age 8 years, Feli x F. age 4, Alice C. age 2 and John W. age 6 months, also shows mother Elizabeth in their household age 66 years. Louisa on 1880 census as 74 years old born in South Carolina.
In 1894 they moved to Arkansas. George was a farmer in Arkansas. He was disabled to work and drew his civil war pension. He owned his house and Ed lived with them. They attended church at Union Hill Baptist Church where they are also buried. It is believed they left Alabama going to Oklahoma and the wagon broke down and they settled near Leslie Arkansas and spent the first year there then moved over the mountain to Witt Springs where they settled and spent the rest of their lives.

George Washington Godfrey enlisted as a private in Company "I" 43 Alabama Infantry and mustered out as a 2nd Lieutenant. Presumably he received a Battlefield commission. He was wounded on September 20, 1863 having taken a steel ball in the leg between the ankle and the knee. During the Chickamauga campaign in Catoosa and Walker Counties, TN which took place between Sep 18 and 20, 1863. The principle commanders of the battle were Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans and Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas [US]; Gen. Braxton Bragg and Lt. Gen. James Longstreet [CS]. There was a total of 34,624 casualties during the battle. (US 16,170; CS 18,454). This was considered a major confederate victory.
