Harvey Barney, one of the county's oldest citizens, died last Thursday night. He had lived in Richland county since the year of its formation and the founding of the city of Olney in 1841. Had he lived until today he would have been 83 years old. Mr. Barney was stricken with paralysis last Friday. He never regained consciousness.

Mr. Barney was born in Windsor county, Vermont, January 25, 1835. His father, Abial Barney, and his uncle, Hiram Barney, with their father, came to Illinois in 1841. They took up land which is now part of the site of Olney and later entered additional land southeast of Olney.

In 1841, when Richland county was formed and the fight for the site of the county seat was raging, the grandfather Barney together with Thomas Lilly offered 5 acres of land as a site for the court house. Olney was chosen as the county seat and the land thus donated became the site of the court house. The remainder of the land was disposed of by the county.

Mr. Barney was married in 1855 to Miss Nancy Greathouse of Albion, who survives him.

Four children were born to them, two of whom are surviving. They are Mrs. A. M. Pitzer of Calhoun and Mrs. Adelbert Shepherd of Olney. Mr. Barney is survived by a sister, Mrs. Rosella Chauncey of Wingate, Ind.

One of the deceased daughters became the wife of A. G. Gaddis of Flora and the other the wife of J. Van Matre.

Mr. Barney served three years in the civil war. He was three times a member of the board of supervisors. Mr. Barney was a member of the Christian church, his baptism being in the water of the Gulf of Mexico, while he was in civil war service.
