The 5th of 9 known children (7 sons) of William Henry Lovell (1845-1928) who emigrated to NZ on the Constantine in 1860 after his parents, Thomas Lovell & Sarah Trolove Parr, died. He moved to Marlborough and worked for Mr Trulove at Woodbank Station. Later he was engaged by William Blick to carry the mail on horseback from Blenheim to Hawkeswood, North Canterbury. By 4 Jan 1868 he was delivering the \Marlborough Express\ from Clarence Ferry to Canterbury. He married Emily Henderson (1852-1919) in Kekerengu, Marlborough on 27 Oct 1872
