The post office at Ritter, (Oregon) was named for Reverend Joseph Ritter at whose ranch it was first established. Joseph Ritter was a pioneer Baptist minister in the John Day Valley (Grant County, Oregon). (Oregon Geographic Names)

The Reverend Joseph Robert Ritter and his family settled on a homestead at what is now called Ritter. He died on October 20, 1886, in a haying accident, when he fell from a wagon and broke his neck. He was buried in the cemetery located on the edge of his homesteaded land. The location is unknown as there is no marker.
