Allen Leon Cornell, 87, a longtime resident of Sheboygan, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Friday, March 27, 2009, at Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, under the care of Aurora VNA Home Hospice.
Allen was born June 30, 1921, to the late Leon and Alice (Anderson) Cornell of Washington Island.
In 1940 the Cornell family moved their commercial fishing business to Sheboygan to take advantage of a more open water winter port, having for years fished out of Washington Island, and Algoma during the winter.
In 1941 Allen enlisted in the United States Coast Guard with the rank of BM1 due to his great knowledge of boats and water. He spent his time patrolling in the Atlantic for German U-Boats. With no USCG reserve in the area, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and in 1951, was called to active duty due to the Korean Conflict. His first assignment was to put the BB64 (the Battleship Wisconsin) into commission. He was in charge of the aft deck, which contained the big guns, and the helicopter pad.
On December 22, 1951, he married Audrey Jacobi of Cleveland at St. John's /St. Peter's Catholic Church in Cleveland.
After completing his tours of duty, he returned to Sheboygan and resumed his Cornell Fisheries business. After retiring from fishing, he worked for the Kohler Co. as a pipe fitter and was later employed at the Sheboygan Retirement Home in charge of maintenance, and later a purchasing agent.
Allen was an avid hunter and enjoyed many years of camping in his "Happy" Holiday Rambler, mostly in the Kettle Moraine Parks.
In addition to his wife Audrey, he is survived by his daughter JoAnn Cornell; his son Charles (Marilyn) Cornell; a granddaughter; and great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his in-laws Frederick and Rosane Jacobi, and Paul and Audrey Jacobi; and his nephew David Cornell.
He was preceded in death by his only brother Murray; his sons, John and James; and in-laws Roland and Babette Jacobi, and Harold and Anita Seger.
Burial will take place at St. John/ St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Cleveland .
