George W. Avery was born 1854 in Clayton, Johnston County, NC, the eldest of 2 known children (1 boy/1 girl) born to farmers, Richard Avera/Avery, CSA and his wife, Lucetta/Louisetta Jones. The AVERA/AVERY/AVERYT family has long roots in Johnston County dating back to the 1700's.

He was the maternal grandson of James Jones Jr. & Ulrica Bryan of Clayton, whose son Wiley, would later become his father-in-law.

George's father died sometime after 1860, when he was about 6 years old. His mother remarried shortly thereafter to farmer, George Wilder of Clayton, a marriage that produced a stepsister, Annie L. Wilder (1869). Wilder was stepfather to both George and his sister, Sarah, and some public records show them having adopted the Wilder surname.

George Avery married his 1st cousin, Addie Jones of Clayton in 1875 when he was 21 and she 22. The couple would farm in the upper Clayton area (near Garner) and raise 6 known children:

* Hettie O. Avery (1876-1964)
* James Richard Avery(1878-1940)
* David Wiley Avery (1882-1909)
* Hubert George Avery (1886-1972)
* Eunice Avery (1890-1972)
* Dwight Samuel Avery(1895-1974)

George died in 1916 at age 62. His widow passed 6 years later in 1922. They are buried together at Mount Moriah with other family members.
