Herbert's mother, Caroline Matilda Lane, daughter of Samuel P. Lane and Nancy Cox of New Bern, first married Joseph Hartley, ca. 1857. Two children were born to this marriage: Lydia Hartley (1858-1864), and Edward P. "Ned" Hartley (1860), Herbert's stepbrother.
During the Civil War, the Hartley family fled the area and moved inland to stay in Clayton, Johnston County, presumably with relatives. After contracting diphtheria, Joseph Hartley, daughter Lydia, and Caroline's mother, Nancy Cox Lane, all died ca. 1864.
After the war, Caroline Lane Hartley married (2nd) James Arnold in 1866 at Lane Chapel. James Arnold died in 1872 when Herbert was 5 years old. Caroline then married (3rd) Harry Kilpatrick on December 8, 1875, a widower with child, in Craven County. No children were born of this marriage.
Herbert Arnold Sr. married Pearl Vernon Kilpatrick, daughter of John Lewis Kilpatrick & Frances Holland Moseley of Contentnea, Lenoir Co, on June 8, 1893. He was 26, and she 19. The couple remained in Craven County most of their adult lives, where they raised 7 known children. Herbert worked as a mail contractor (1900), on a horse farm (1910) and was a farm supervisor (1920) in Vanceboro, Craven County. It was after this time, the couple moved to Garner, Wake County, most likely after the marriage of their son Herbert, Jr. to Doris Honeycutt.
Herbert Lane Arnold, Sr. died in 1941, aged 74. His bride of 48 years remained a widow another 25 years, passing in 1966 at age 92.
Son, Charles Sheldon Arnold and son, Herbert Lane Arnold Jr. and his wife Emma "Doris" Honeycutt are buried here.
