Harley Oscar Hake was the son of David L. and Alice Jane Hake. His paternal grandparents were David Hake Sr. and Dorothy Hood Hake. His maternal grandparents were George Washington Hake and Eliza Jane Hoffman Hake.

Harley Oscar Hake married Alma Ida Moebius who was born on 7 September 1886 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She died on 27 April 1977, in Seattle Washington and was buried on 30 April 1977, in the Vashon Island Cemetery. Alma was the daughter of Herman Moebius and Olga Polti. Harley and Alma were married on 22 January 1911, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The first winery on Vashon Island was the Harley O. Hake winery in Docton, (south tip of Maury Island) established in 1936. The winery opened after prohibition and closed in the 1940's.
