Millie Whitener
Hickory, N.C. - Millie Whitener, 95, of Hickory, passed away April 1, 2009, at Carolina Rehab of Burke County.
Millie was born Nov. 29, 1913, in Catawba County to the late Ellis Shuford and Lily Abernethy Whitener.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mandy Hudson Whitener; two sisters, Edith Young and Velma Long; and three brothers, Craig Whitener, Roy Whitener and Thirman Whitener.
Millie was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church, where he taught the young adult class for 50 years and was a deacon emeritus. He was a retired brick mason, carpenter and farmer, having worked for 22 years for WE Burton Construction and retired from Stephens Construction Co. He also was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are a stepson, Robert H. Stevens and wife, Sue, of Hickory; a stepgrandson, Bruce Stevens and friend, Tina Cline, of Hickory; sisters, Gladys Cline and Eva Hildebran, both of Hickory; special friend, Margaret Lail of Hickory; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special pet, Susie Q.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Providence Baptist Church, with the Revs. Charles Hensley, William Kanupp, Ernest Richards and Harold Whitener officiating.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
