Sampson B Graves was the son of Nathaniel Graves and his wife Lucy Cheshire Graves of Bladen Co, NC. Sampson had no wife nor child. He enlisted for 1 year at Elizabethtown, NC May 3, 1861. He was assigned to Co B, NC Reg 18th infantry. His war records state in one place that he "was killed at the battle of Groveton, VA 1 Sept 1862". At another place it states that he "died of wounds received at the battle of Ox Hill on 3 Sept 1862". His father received $135.00 for his pay back to April 30, 1862, including bounty due from state of NC and bounty due from the Confederate State. All effects were lost at the time of his death.
