Syrena attended school at Rhodes and finished the eleventh grade. After school she took up the millinery art, working in that profession until her marriage. After her marriage she and her husband bought a farm, one half miles southwest of Melbourne and three and one-half miles east of Rhodes.

Syrena had her own pony and buggy which enabled her to go to town and attend meeting. In those early years, they rode the train to the state fair, taking all their eats along.

They farmed the same farm for over 40 years. They moved to Ames where Leslie worked for the experimental farm at Iowa State College. They returned to this area for a time before making their home in Melbourne. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1940.
