I, Loren R. just received transfer of this memorial on 02/03/22. I will be researching many resources, transcribing, editing, and then posting an updated biography for Gail sometime in the near future. At the present time I'm comparing and updating all my memorial's information with familysearch.org. Thanks for your patience, Loren.

In memorium to Gail Bartosh… We dedicate the Cookie Project

All of God's children are special and beloved by him. But now and then in this world one meets a person who just seems to be a bit more special than the majority. When we meet that person, we know that we are seeing his love incarnate. Such a person is Gail Bartosh.

Gail was born in Webster Groves, a suburb of St. Louis Mo., where her mother Mildred taught 1st grade. The family moved to Calif. Because of a good job opportunity for father Bartosh. They settled in Anaheim and became members of the Garden Grove Community Church when it still met in the drive-in theatre. Mildred went to work as a volunteer at the church, eventually becoming a staff member. She has now been on staff for 19 years. You may recognize her as the sweetly smiling gray haired lady on the eighth floor who maintains the church membership records.

Father, known as 'Bart' Bartosh, was a deacon and elder of the church until his death in 1966. Funeral services were conducted personally by Dr. Schuller.

Gail came to work at the church in the maintenance department and soon was everyone's favorite with her willing hands and sweet disposition. Last August '81, Gail was diagnosed as having lung cancer. Following a mastectomy she was immobilized for three months. [Initial diagnosis was breast cancer in 1978/9 - this surgery was a 2nd mastectomy]

Gail, now a spare 76 lbs., uses a wheelchair and a portable oxygen tank she calls "Betsy'. However, with all of her health problems, Gail, who celebrated her 41st birthday this August 14th, is still an active member of the church, and a very enthusiastic participant in the prison cookie ministry. Monday through Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p. m. Gail works at the Children's Center in the Hope Building cutting construction paper for the Christmas cards, snipping pictures off of old cards, generally making certain that the cards "pass muster."

We asked Gail why, with such limited energy, she chooses to spend it on this particular project, Gail's answer was, "I feel that it is so important for these inmates to know that God loves them and that there are people who care no matter what they have done and that God does forgive them their sins. We do not always know why God allows certain things to happen, for example, my illness; except that I know God is using me right now."

We asked Gail if she thought the children were just having fun making the cards or understood the significance of what they have been doing. "Oh, they know what they are doing. The children have seen and read the thank-you letters. Why, some of them have even had individual letters sent to them from grateful prisoners. They are very much aware of the fact that they are doing this "for Jesus."

Gail, as frail as she is, and with limited energy, makes a special plea to the handicapped as she says, "Look at me, sometimes I can barely get up. It would be easier to lie in bed. Sometimes I can hardly breathe yet I've found that coming in to work gives me a sense of purpose. I know that I feel closer to God than in the past. No matter what your handicap. God can use you. Get involved, make yourself useful."

Gail Bartosh, sitting in her wheelchair, working on the God Loves You cards that accompany each cookie box is a true example of God's love in action.
