Robert Owen Key 1929-2006
Barrington school principal for 28 years

Robert Owen Key, an elementary school principal in Barrington for 28 years, used his skills as a storyteller to endear himself to his pupils.

"He loved children of that age," said his wife Marilyn Key. "He dearly loved being a principal. It was his joy."

Mr. Key, 76, a former Barrington resident, died Saturday, Jan. 14 at his Huntley home after a four-year battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

He was born in Detroit and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Keego Harbor, Mich. in 1947. Mr. Key married his wife Marilyn (Grove), his high school sweetheart, in 1949.

Mr. Key received a bachelor's degree in education from Michigan State Normal University, now Eastern Michigan University, in 1952. After graduation he taught at Poupard Elementary School in Harper Woods, Mich. and later received a master's degree in education from the University of Michigan.

In 1962 he was hired by Barrington Community Unit School District 220 and worked as a principal at the Hough Street and North Barrington Elementary Schools. He retired in 1990.

According to his wife, he was a great storyteller and enjoyed telling jokes, which endeared him to his pupils.

"He was very fun-loving," she said. "He enjoyed his students, and they just loved him."

He stayed in touch with the parents of many pupils after he retired as principal, said Mike DeLapp, a Barrington resident whose four children attended North Barrington.

"It was a small, old school with the principal at the front door," DeLapp said. "He was out there when school started and ended, watching everybody come and go. He was always at the school, and there was never an event that went on that he didn't attend. I can't recall ever going into the building when he wasn't there."

DeLapp said Mr. Key "always had an interest in the kids after they graduated and wanted to know what they were doing."

Mr. Key was a Barrington Little League coach when his sons were young.

He and his family lived in Barrington for 17 years before moving to Palatine. Six years ago, Mr. Key and his wife moved to the Sun City retirement community in Huntley.

After retirement, he spent time supporting his grandson's hockey team and attending antique car events.

"Family was important to him, and his top priority was spending time with our sons and grandchildren," his wife said.

Other survivors include three sons, R. Michael, David and Steven; four grandchildren; and his sister, Barbara Deacon.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. Tuesday until a 7 p.m. service at the Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St., Barrington. (Ref: By Rebecca Little, Chicago Tribune, Jan. 17, 2006).

Robert's and wife Marilyn's cremated remains buried May 14, 2022. Attending burial: sons R. Michael, David, and Steve; grandson Gary; and daughters-in-law Linda (Wood) Key and Betsy (Maas) Key. Grandsons Brandon, Nicholas, and Jacob watched video of burial recorded by daughter-in-law Linda.
