As impressive and symbolic as Sam Houston's grave is, it is not the prettiest or most poignant in the cemetery. That distinction belongs to the grave of Rawley Rather Powell, who died at the age of five. His parents bought a large wooded tract to the north of Oakwood Cemetery and dedicated it as a wildlife sanctuary. A large bronze statue of Christ, sculpted by Bertel Thorwaldsen, overlooks his grave.
