Mary Elizabeth Broad entered eternal life at Huron Woods Residential Home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on June 24, 2008.
Mary Murphy was born March 30, 1918, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the first of nine children of Patrick Murphy and Elizabeth (Moelk) Murphy. After graduating from high school with honors, she worked for the U.S. Army in Pittsburgh, where she met Walter Broad. They married on June 26, 1941. They were blessed with 9 children, born in New York, Virginia, Missouri, and Midland.
The family arrived in Midland in 1953. Mary's life was devoted to her family. She was an excellent cook, baker, seamstress, knitter, and all-around homemaker. She made her own clothes as well as many clothes and quilts for her children and grandchildren. Mary was a member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church, where she served on various committees and as a lector. For many years she was a cherished secretary at St. Brigid School. Mary was an avid reader, and she completed the Sunday Times crossword with little effort. She and Walter traveled to Europe and throughout the states, vacationing, visiting family, and participating in Elderhostel educational programs. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary shortly before Walter's death in 1991.
Mary Brpad was survived by her children and grandchildren: Anthony (Carol) of La Jolla, California, and their children Bartholomew and Claire; Agnes Norton (David) of Solon, Ohio, and sons Andrew and Edward; Lucy Scholand (Paul) of Ypsilanti and children Catherine, Timothy, Matthew, and Peter; Christopher of Houston; Gregory of Silver Spring, Maryland; Martha of Philadelphia; Walter of Houston and children Natasha, Lucy and Jason; and James of Midland and daughter Stephanie; by her siblings Cecilia, Bernadette, and Eugene; and great-grandchildren Michael and Chrissie.
