Father Jerome Francis Stern, 65, Catholic priest and pastor, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2004, following a brief bout with cancer.

On May 31, he was taken to Middlesboro Appalachian Regional Healthcare Hospital, where he lapsed into a coma. He never regained consciousness.

Fr. Stern's longest tenure of service was to St. William Parish, London, where he served as pastor from 1989 to 2001. There, Fr. Stern presided over the construction of a new 500-seat, $2 million church, which was dedicated in 2000. The construction project was necessitated by an over 100 percent growth in the congregation during his pastorate.

Most recently, he had served as pastor of St. Julian Parish in Middlesboro, and its mission. St. Anthony Parish in Pineville.

Jerome Francis Stern was born February 17, 1939 in Covington to Joseph Francis and Matilda Imfloa Domaschko Stern. He was educated in St. Stephen School and Covington Latin School. In 1955, he entered St. Pius X Seminary in Erlanger. In 1957, he entered St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., for philosophy and theology studies. He completed these studies in 1963.

Fr. Stern was ordained to the transitional diaconate September 21, 1962, by Bishop Lenard P. Cowley, Bishop of St. Paul, Minn. On June 1, 1963, he was ordained to the priesthood in Covington's Cathedral Basilica of the Assuption, by Covington Bishop H. Richard Ackerman.

Following ordination, Fr. Stern served 10 years as associate at Sacred Heart Parish Corbin, 1963-1970 and 1971-1974. In 1970, he served for one year as associate at the cathedral basilica in Covington.

In 1974, Fr. Stern was named administrator of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Pikeville. In 1981 he was appointed dean of the Mountain East Deanery of the Diocese of Covington. In 1983, Fr. Stern was appointed pastor of St. Gregory Parish in Barbourville, and its mission, St. Anthony Parish in Pineville.

Following the establishment of the Diocese of Lexington in 1988, Fr. Stern was appointed pastor of St. William Parish in London, and its mission, St. Sylvester Parish in East Bernstadt in 1989. He also continued briefly as temporary administrator of the Barbourville parish. In 1993, while continuing as pastor in London, Fr. Stern was named pastor of St. Ann Parish in Manchester, a position he held for one year, until the diocese realigned several parishes.

Fr. Stern assumed the pastorate of St. Julian Parish in Middlesboro in July, 2001.

Preceding Fr. Stern in death were his parents Joseph Francis Stern and Matilda Imfloa Domaschko Stern.

He is survived by one sister, Mary Anne Stern, of Newport, Ky; and three brothers, Joseph Stern of Fairfax, Ohio; Bernie Stern, Fairfield, Ohio; and Andrew Stern, Fleming, Ky; and 14 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 6, from 9:30 am until 10:30 am Mass at St. Julian Church, Middlesboro. Visitation will be followed with a Rosary service at 3 pm, and there will be Evening Prayer (Vespers) at 5 pm. Bishop Ronald W. Gainer will preside. Father William Poole will be the homilist. Immediately after Evening Prayer, there will be a reception.

Fr. Stern will be buried from the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington on Monday, June 7. Visitation will 2-6 pm. Following visitatioan at 6:30 pm, Bishop of Lexington Ronald W. Gainer will be the principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial. Father Al Ruschmann will be the homilist. A Rosary will be prayed at 3 pm with Vespers at 5 pm Monday. A graveside service and interment will be Tuesday, June 8 at 10 am at St. Joseph Cemetery, Cold Spring, Ky. Father Al Ruschmann will preside at the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to the St. Julian Catholic Church, 118 East Chester Avenue, Middlesboro.
