He was born July 26, 1907, in Oakford, the son of Ryal and Martha Ann Skaggs Armstrong. He married Marjorie Golden in 1933. Mr. Armstrong graduated from Springfield High School in 1925 and from the University of Illinois, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1929. He went on to earn a degree from the Lincoln College of Law in Springfield and was admitted to the Illinois State Bar in 1936. In June 1988, the Illinois State Bar Association conferred the title of senior counselor in the recognition of more than 50 years of honorable service.
He was an electrical engineer, legal coordinator and patent and trademark counsel for the Sangamo Electric Co. for 43 years, when he retired to private practice.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 72 years, where he served as a lay leader. He was also a member of the board of trustees, administrative board, Methodist Men, St. Paul's Lodge No. 500 AF&AM, Ansar Temple, Cracker Barrell, Capitol City Camera Club, Tintypers Camera Club, Sons of the American Revolution, Sangamon County Historical Society, Phi Eta Sigma and Eta Kappa Nu. He was past president of the University of Illinois Dads Association.
Survivors: wife, Marjorie; a son, Allen E. Armstrong of Lexington, Mass.; a daughter, Elizabeth Koets of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson; and three granddaughters.
Services: First United Methodist Church, the Revs. J. Gerald Nichols and Dan Seibert officiating. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
