Joseph Craig Smith, insurance agent, died at his home on Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the age of 83. He was born November 15, 1925, to Aline Craig and Joseph Thomas Smith, who preceded him in death. Betty Fish Smith, his beloved wife of nearly 58 years, survives him. Their children are: Craig and Sally Smith, Meg and Bob Ammerman, Tallu Smith, Becky Smith and Amanda and Fred Caudill. There are eight grandchildren: Sarah Wylie Ammerman, Joseph Ammerman, Jesse Ammerman, Celia Ammerman, John Gray, Andrew Smith-Moreland, Sabina Smith-Moreland, Bailey Caudill and Wylie Caudill.

Joe Craig Smith was an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Cynthiana High School. He joined the United States Navy at 17 and served as a Captain in the Army Reserves. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in commerce. Upon settling back in Cynthiana, Smith was a vital member of First United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served as a trustee and Sunday school superintendent, was a member of United Methodist Men, and acted as general contractor for the education building.

He served the City of Cynthiana as a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Country Club and the Industrial Foundation. He served on the boards of Harrison Memorial Hospital, Housing Authority, Senior Citizens and Boy Scouts. He chaired the United Fund and Red Cross Drives. In 1980, he was named Businessman of the Year. His business was Smith Insurors, Inc., which he established in 1953. He earned the designation of Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI), in 1990, and taught the third portion of the professional instruction himself. He truly loved the business of insurance and pursued up-to-date knowledge of its intricacies as long as he was able.

Funeral services are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at First United Methodist Church. Rev. Jimmy Owens will preside. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, and a graveside service at Battle Grove Cemetery will follow the church service. Pallbearers will be Bob Ammerman, Fred Caudill, Joseph Ammerman, John Gray, Andrew Smith-Moreland and Wylie Caudill. Memorials may be made to: First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 307, Cynthiana, Kentucky 41031; or Hospice of the Bluegrass, 1317 U.S. Highway 62 East, Cynthiana, Kentucky 41031.
