FUNERAL SERVICES were held Sunday afternoon at the First Presbyterian Church for Merle R. Self, 912 E. 2nd St., who died Sept. 20 at Hoemako Hospital. Rev. Lloyd Ewart, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiated.

Born Oct. 17, 1897 in Temple, Texas, she was a graduate of the College of the Ozarks, Clarksville, Ark. She taught school for approximately 20 years at Clarksville, Ark., Poteau, Okla., Texas and Eloy, Ariz. In 1922 she married James M. Self Sr. in Poteau, Okla., who survives her.

The Selfs lived in the area for 18 years and in Eloy for three years. Mrs. Self was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Hoemako Hospital Auxiliary and the Casa Grande Oasis Garden Club.

A friendly, pleasant woman, Mrs. Self worked diligently for the organizations to which she belonged. She was currently serving on the Hoemako Hospital Auxiliary board of directors. She also served as chairman of the Hoemako Auxiliary sewing group, a group that sews infant wear, surgical gowns and other linen supplies for the Hoemako Hospital. She also enjoyed sewing for her grandchildren.

A member of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Self was vitally interested in the construction of the new church. She served on the church planning and building committee and compiled a history of the church here in Casa Grande, as well as a record of the building progress. She worked quietly and efficiently without interest in gaining recognition for her efforts.

She enjoyed working in her backyard garden. Her activities were halted when she was hospitalized in July; the hospitalization period lasted until her death, with but a few days spent at her home during her last illness. Her many friends never forgot her -- her hospital room was filled daily with flowers and cards wishing her well.

Survivors in addition to her husband include her sons, Harold and James M. Jr., both of Casa Grande; her grandchildren, Pamela and Dwayne, Casa Grande; her sisters, Mrs. Gladys Wilson, Long Beach, CA, and Mrs. May Stambaugh, Tulsa, OK.

Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.
