Mary Elizabeth Bryars, born July 5, 1920 to Tunstall Bryars and Margaret Lopez Bryars in Latham, Alabama, died March, 2009 at the age of 88 in Houston, Texas. Mary was preceded in death by both parents and both husbands; four brothers and four sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Wanda Morrison Christie and her husband, Dennis of Magnolia, Texas; one grandson, Robert Christopher Boykin and his wife, Dinah of Friendswood, TX; and one granddaughter, Bonnie Michelle Collins and her husband, Brad of Houston, TX; four great-grandchildren, Alexis Lee, Madison Elizabeth and Jamie Ann Boykin and Bradley Joe Collins, II and numerous other family members. Mary married Robert Gaines Morrison December 23, 1940, and after Robert's death in 1980, married George Bryars in 1982. George preceded Mary in death May, 2000. Mary was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and was a lifelong Methodist. She was a member of the Latham United Methodist Church in Latham, Alabama, and more recently a member of the Friendswood United Methodist Church. She was a founding member of the South Brookley United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama. Mary was a civil service worker at Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile, Alabama and later transferred to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas where she retired after 25 years of service. She was known as "Magnolia Blossom" while working in Mobile and after moving to Houston became known as "Alabama Mary". Funeral Services are scheduled Monday March 9, 2009 at 1PM at Forest Park East Funeral Home in Webster, TX. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 12, 2009, at 12:00 Noon with The Reverend Larry Rawls officiating. The family will receive friends from 11AM until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Latham United Methodist Church in Latham, Alabama.
