Hebron and Thayer country lost another of pioneer citizens when Mrs. Samuell died at 12:25 Wednesday afternoon, March 12, at her home in Hebron, Nebraska, at the age of 83 years, 9 month and 1 day.
She had been blind since 1933 and ill for several months prior to her death.
Laura Ann Lowry, daughter of Sarah Ann and Samuel S Lowry, was born in Ravenna Mercer county, Missouri, Jun 11, 1857 She was the only daughter in a family of six children, who, with her parents have preceded her. Her entire youth was spent in Mercer county, Missouri.
On December 3, 1876, she married William C. Samuell, and two years later, came by covered wagon with her husband and baby daughter, Maude, to live on a farm near Belvidere, Nebr. In 1812, the family moved to Hebron. Mr. Samuell died May 29, 1920.
Mrs. Samuell has been a member of the Christian church for the past fifty years first placing her membership with the Church at Belvidere, and later transferring to Hebron
Eight children survive her.They are: Mrs. Maude Scott, Mrs. Gertrude Palmer and Miss Helen Samuell, all of Hebron; Mrs.Edna Ahlschwede and Mrs.Bess Ahlschwede of Appleton,Wis. J. B: Samuell of Kanorado , Kans. Mrs. Byrdie Back¬er of Nampa, Idaho; Mrs Delma Stewart of Lexington, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews. One son died in infancy.
Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church in Hebron at 2: 30 o'clock on Sun¬day afternoon, March 16. Rev. Charles s Livingston, minister of the Christian church officiat¬ing. Interment was made in the Belvidere cemetery, where Mr.Samuell is buried.
Pallbearers were: Henry Pohlmann, Cliff Ferguson, Jas. Stewart, John Craley, Fred Daringer and H.E.Barbee, all old time friends and neighbors.
Jessie Moss was soloist, singing, "Crossing the Bar". -The quartet, Mrs. M. C. Hiatt, Mr. and Mrs. Mel Moss and Ralph Hawkins, sang "Beautiful isle of Somewhere," and ‘Going Down the Valley, One by One.'' These hymns were favorites s with Mrs. Samuell
For many years she was an active member and worker in the Rebekch Lodge Despite her blindness, she recognized only the bright side of life, and spent much of her leisure time during her last years, crochet¬ing beautiful rugs
Always a devoted mother, her last thoughts and deepest con¬cerns were for the welfare of her children she was leaving for the time.
"We cannot say and we will not say
That she, is dead; she is just away.
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand
She has wondered into an un¬known land."
Those who came from out of town to attend the funeral of Mrs. Laura Samuell, were: Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Samuell of Kanorado, Kans., Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Ahlsehwede and Gertrude of Appleton, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. F.S.Stewart, Mr. and Mrs.Earl Naffsiger and Mr. and Mrs.Ray Hastings of Lexington, Nebr
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Andersen of Republic, Kana., and Mrs.L.C. Ahlschwede of Appleton Wis. All have returned to their homes except Mrs. L. C. Ahlschwede, who has been here since shortly before Christmas, assisting in the care of her mother Another daughter of Mrs. Sarnuells, Mrs. Birdie Backer of Nampa, ldaho, spent several weeks here, caring for her mother during her illness.
