Married first, Marion Ira Groshong, August 13, 1922, Vladivostok, Russia. Married second, Earl Edward McLean, December 22, 1925, San Francisco County, California.

The English translation of the Russian marriage register for her first marriage says: MATRENA GEORGIEVFA AFONINA, Russian citizen, of the village Makarova, Tetiukhinak canton, Olga county, Maritime Province, daughter of George and Fevronia, parents are dead, born in the city of Borieogsliebsk, Tambov Province, on May 18, 1903, of the Orthodox faith.

The Family Search transcription of the second marriage record shows her parents as George Afonen and Anna Bazarnova.

Her marriage and most passport records show her given name as Matrena. One passport record and death and burial records show it as Motia. The English version of her surname is recorded variously as Afonian, Afonia, Afonina, Afonen, and Aphonian. The former seems to be the most common spelling.

Motia committed suicide by poison two months after her husband hung himself, and left a son, Edward Earl McLean, nee Edward I. Groshong, (Jun 10, 1923 - Feb 23, 1994).
