Another Pioneer Passes Away
Walter. Barber, 85 year old resident, passed away at the L.D. S. Hospital in Afton on Saturday afternoon after a short illness, altho' his health has been failing for the past year or more.
Walter Riches Barber, son of George and Louisa Raymond Barber was born January 13, 1859 at Lehi Utah. He moved with his parents as a boy to help colonize Smithfield, and spent his boyhood there and at Logan.
At the age of 19 he was called to fill a three year mission in Australia and New Zealand for the LDS church. After returning from his mission he came to Star Valley to live. He first came to Star Valley when he was 19 years old, returning to Logan before going on his mission. He has lived in the valley nearly sixty years.
On October 26 1893 he was married in the Logan temple to Clara Whittle of Richmond, Utah. They homesteaded a place on the Jack Knife, which their son Walter owns at present. Mrs Barber passed away 21 years ago, and since that time he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. Mary McNeel and her family.
Mr. Barber has truly been a pioneer of the valley, always being hospitable and honest to a fault, he has been a financier and used his means to help many of the people, especially of the lower valley. He was never a public speaking man, but was considered by all who knew him as being one of the fine builders of Star Valley.
He was a lover of nature and loved to fish and hunt. He loved the snow capped mountains, the streams and trees. He was one of the largest cattle owners of the valley for many years.
He had a humorous side of life and always tried to make a difficult situation seem lighter. He was truly a good father and neighbor, who will be missed in the community.
Funeral services were held in the South Ward chapel on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Bp. Calvin Bateman of Etna conducted the services.
The prelude and postlude music was played by Ruth Clark.
Invocation was offered by Bp. Calvin Bateman.
Vocal Solo by Arch Gardner, "Resignation" accompanied on the piano by Nada Joy Gardner.
The speakers were Joseph Linford, Bp. R.R. Dana and Luther H. Haderlie, all spoke of his fine character.
Solo by Ruth Clark, "Going Home."
Duet, Alta Sanderson and Walter Brower, assisted on the piano by Reba Sanderson.
Remarks by Bp. Bateman.
Benediction by Edgar Heap.
The pall bears were A.S. Jensen, Chas. Weber, Joseph Heap, Nels J. Hemmert, Bp. Osborn Low and L.C. Jensen.
He was taken to Richmond, Utah for interment and laid by the side of his wife.
