Memorial Cenotaph

George B. Macomber was the son of John Jarvis Macomber and Abigail Fobes Packard. Immediately after graduating from Amherst College, George volunteered for service during the Civil War. He was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant at Oakham, Massachusetts, on August 6, 1862, and mustered into Company E, 34th Massachusetts Infantry, on August 11. Lieutenant Macomber was stationed at Fort Lyons, Virginia, until June 1863, and after that served as Acting Adjutant of his regiment until March 1864. He was promoted to captain on September 20, 1864, while serving as Acting Assistant Inspector General, 1st Division, Army of West Virginia, a position he held until December 1864. Captain Macomber was breveted a major, U.S. Volunteers, on March 13, 1865, and transferred to command Company A, 24th Massachusetts Infantry, on June 16, 1865. George was mustered out at Richmond, Virginia, on January 20, 1866. In May 1866 he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the Regular Army and mustered into 2nd Battalion, 14th U.S. Infantry. George married Kate Mauriece Godwin (born about 1841) at Washington, D.C., June 28, 1866. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in January 1867 and transferred to the 32nd U.S. Infantry on the reorganization of the Army. George received a Regular Army brevet to major on March 2nd, 1867. He served as Acting Assistant Inspector-General of the Department of Columbia from November 1866 to June 1867 while stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco, California. He remained at the presidio until October of the same year. In January 1868 he joined his company at Fort Goodwin, Arizona Territory, and was afterward stationed at Fort Bowie. Lieutenant Macomber died at Fort Bowie on September 18, 1869, from injuries he sustained when he was struck by a falling derrick while he was supervising the weighing of hay. George was buried in the Fort Bowie Cemetery. Remains found in his gravesite were transferred to the San Francisco National Cemetery after Fort Bowie was closed. Kate filed for a widow's pension December 13, 1869.
