William was the son of Thomas Moore and Winneford "Winney" Pate Moore.

William was born and raised in Clarke Co., Alabama.

William had one brother, John A. Moore who was two years younger than William. John would marry Catherine's sister Nancy E. Franklin in the same year as William and Catherine would marry.

William married Catherine C. Franklin, daughter of the late Thomas B. and Mary McCorquodale Franklin, on December 15, 1858 in Clarke Co., Alabama.

When the Civil War began, William joined the Confederacy. He was a Pvt. in Co. G, 32nd Alabama Infantry. He mustered out in June of 1865, having to take the Oath of Allegiance before being allowed to return to his home in Alabama.

The Civil war left the South in ruins and at the mercy of the Yankee Carpet Baggers. The taxes were set so high, they couldn't make ends meet on the farm. Both of their parents had passed away and most of their family had been killed or moved away. There was nothing to keep them in Alabama. William, Catherine and the two boys set out for Texas, to find a new life. They settled near Runge, Karnes Co., Texas. There they made a nice size farm which made a good living for them. It was there William and Catherine raised their four sons and lived out the rest of their lives.

William and Catherine were the parents of

1.William R. Moore, b.1864.
