MALONE -- Gerald F. Patnode, 90, of Sawyer Avenue, Malone, formerly of Churubusco, died Friday, March 28, 2008, at the Alice Hyde Medical Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1917, in Churubusco, he was the son of Maxim and Rose (Dupuis) Patnode. His parents predeceased him. On April 20, 1950, he married Therese Gervais at St. Eusebe-de-Vercil Church in Montreal. She predeceased him on Jan. 23, 2002.
Mr. Patnode worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp. from 1936 to 1939, having assisted in the construction of Cooley Dam in Washington. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1945. In August 1982, at a reunion of the 808th Engineers Battalion, Mr. Patnode received the second highest award for non-combatants, our nation's Legion of Merit Medal of Honor, for a citation received in January 1943, when Patnode was serving in the South Pacific.
Mr. Patnode owned and operated Patnode's Garage in Churubusco from 1946 until he retired in 1979. He and his wife Therese moved to Malone in 1995. He was a member of the Chateaugay Knights of Columbus Third Degree.
Mr. Patnode is survived by four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Beulah LaDuke of Chateaugay, Luva and Richard Bourcier of Malone, Marie Bova of Plattsburgh, Leila and Maurice Wood of St. Louis, Mo.; and two sisters-in-law, Madora Patnode of Chateaugay and Theresa Patnode of Plattsburgh.
Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Floyd, Donald and Lawrence.
Mr. Patnode was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Churubusco until moving to Malone, where he attended St. Joseph's Church.
Family and friends will gather at Chateaugay Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to a Mass of Christian burial, which will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Churubusco. Burial with full military honors will take place at Immaculate Heart Cemetery in the spring.
