Funeral services for Byron V. Davies were held from Marison's chapel on Friday, Nov 24 at 2 pm with the Rev J.V. Belger of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was in Silver Lake Cemetery in the family lot beside the grave of his wife who passed away on Jan 26, 1930. Mr. Davies was born in Milwaukee on Feb 8, 1852 at the corner of 6th and Wisconsin Streets where the Wisconsin theatre now stands. His father came to that city from Wales and operated a carpenter shop and contracting business there practically all his life. The deceased was for many years employed as a steam fitter for the Rundle Spence Manufacturing company Milwaukee, In that capacity he installed the steam heating plant in the old Emder house in 1893 and in the court house here in 1896. He came to Portage in 1899 to live and on July 12 1901, was married to Miss Emily Goede. Seven children were born to that union: Rowland A; Ethel M, Madison; Arthur F, Milwaukee; Hawley M; William F; Ruth D,Madison, and Rodney D. There were also three children by a previous marriage. At the specific request of Mr Davies the pall bearers at the funeral were his six sons, Rowland, Arthur, Hawley, William, Rodney and Herbert, of Chicago. Mr. Davies had been a rural mail carrier out of Portage for 20 years and was widely known and respected. Prior to that time he had conducted a bus business at the old Emder hotel, then one of the finest hosteleries in the middle west. At one time he had nine horses and four buses operating from the Emder house.
