John Ira Barrett went to his heavenly Father after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, March 17th at the Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines.
John was born on May 10, 1933 to Chester and Elizabeth Barrett in Westboro, Missouri. He graduated from Westboro High School in May 1951. He excelled in high school football and finished with 20 TDs his senior year. His nickname for the Westboro Wildcats was "Speed Merchant Johnnie Barrett".
He went to Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, MO from September 1951 to May 1955 and graduated with honors with a Bachelor in Science in Education. While there, he met Marcia Leigh and they became best of friends. After college, he enlisted into the Army Security Agency for three years. He was stationed at Fort Shaftner in Hawaii. After one year, he came home and married Marcia in June 20, 1957. They returned to Hawaii to live the rest of his tour of duty.
After receiving, his honorable discharge he attended Drake University and received his Masters in History in May 1959.
John was a dedicated teacher and administrator in the Des Moines Public School district for 38 years. He started teaching at Kurtz Junior High in August 1959 and these were some of his special memories because of the numerous outside gatherings. He transferred to Roosevelt High School in 1965 as an American History teacher. Due to a hearing loss affliction he was forced to leave the classroom and became a vice principal in July 1967. He became the Principal of Merrill Junior High in August 1974. After 13 years, he transferred to McCombs Middle School. He retired from education in January 1997.
In his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling across North America and the world. The locations John and his wife visited included Canada, the southwestern United States, Hawaii, Panama, Bahamas, and Peru. His favorite locations were Ireland and Scotland.
Every summer he would spend three weeks in St. Petersburg, Florida. He was a lifetime St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed watching baseball. Other interest include reading American history, visiting Civil War battlefields, watching birds, reading Zane Grey westerns, and spending time with family especially his grandchildren. His favorite singer was Patti Page and his favorite song was the "Tennessee Waltz"
John will be missed by his beloved wife Marcia of 52 years, his sons Jeffrey and Jerry, his daughters in law Dee and Luisa, and his grandchildren Alexandria and Riley.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Fort Des Moines United Methodist church, 6205 SW 9th Street in Des Moines. Graveside services were held 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at Center Grove Cemetery between Tarkio & Westboro, Missouri, with Rev. Russell Smith, of the Westboro United Methodist Church officiating. Memorials may be given to Fort Des Moines United Methodist Church, Kavanagh House and the Boone Home.
