He was the son of Peter Hartz and Anna Harding. He was the brother of Adam Hartz and Henry Hartz.
He served in Company G, 10th Indiana Infantry.

The citizens showed their appreciation of his judgement and ability by electing him Township assessor for twenty odd years, and until the infirmities incident to old age made it necessary for him to decline a further election. His was the sunny genial disposition. He made friends and retained them. He was noted for his witcism and jests and thoroughly on him. We will all miss him. The neighbors showed their respect by the showers of flowers placed upon his casket and the large attendance at his funeral.

A couple of years after he returned from the service where he rendered aid to his country during the dark days of the Rebellion. He was an active member of the G.A.R. and while health permitted, attended its meetings.
The children are Mrs. Belle McDonald, Mrs. Nora Lowrie of Kramer, Peter Hartz, of Kramer, Jacob Hartz of Indianapolis, Archie Hartz of Hammond, Indiana, Rena Hartz Potters, deceased, Emma Hartz Cassel, deceased, Ethel Hartz, deceased and Mrs. Maggie Landon, of near Williamsport. Besides the children there are his aged wife who ministered to him through his long sickness, a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He passed to his reward May 21, 1927, aged 87 years 8 months and 14 days. Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Arthur Lowrie, where he died, conducted by Rev. Harold, of Williamsport with the aid of the G.A.R. and the Ladies Circle. Mrs. Boyd had charge of the entire ceremonies. Burial was made in the McCabe Cemetery." (Obituary provided by Eric Cassel)
