William was the son of Jeremiah Vardeman Garrett Sr.(1818-1902) and Elizabeth Jane Poole Garrett (1830-1893). He married Jane Tharp (1845-1901) on December 26, 1869 in Craig, Holt County, Missouri. They were the parents of 4 children that I am aware of; Leonora, Othelow Homer, Estella Marie and Robert. William was a veteran of the Civil Ware. His pension records from the Civil War, state in William's handwriting, that his middle name was Silas. He enrolled from Glenwood, Iowa on 18 Jul 1863, age 18, height 5'5", fair complexion, gray eyes, dark hair, farmer. Mustered out 14 Jul 1865 at Davenport, Iowa. He was really 17 y, 5 m at time of enlistment. The 1900 Federal Census for Thurston County, Nebraska lists his occupation as a billiard hall proprietor.
