Suel was small when his parents joined the Church and moved to Nauvoo, Illinois. He was baptized when he was eight years old. He helped the men who built the Nauvoo Temple by carrying water to them. His father died of cholera while crossing the plains. Suel was 17 at the time.

When they arrived in the Valley with the James C. Snow Company in 1852 they were sent to Pleasant Grove to settle. A year later in 1853, he was called on a mission to Fort Supply, among the Indians. While he was on his mission, his mother and family moved to Lehi, Utah. Shortly after his return, he married Elizabeth. Suel went to help with the Echo Canyon War.

In 1856 they moved to Cache Valley and later to Hyde Park. He was a large, strong man being about six feet tall and weighing about 190 pounds. He had thick black hair and blue eyes, and was very muscular and powerful. He was expert with a broad axe, right or left hand. He often won running and jumping matches.

He never served time for polygamy. He was active in the community and church, serving whenever asked or needed.
