Archie was born August 14, 1883, the oldest of four children born to Francis Marion Hanks and Hattie Young. Both parents died about the same time during 1892 while the family was living in Payne County, Oklahoma, leaving the four children as orphans. They were assigned a legal gaurdian and about a year later their uncle James Stewart Hanks brought them back to Marion County, Illinois, where many of their other aunts and uncle were living. The four children, Archie, Alonzo "Lonnie", Stewart and Madge were placed in different families with their aunts and uncles. In 1901 Archie went to Mt. Vernon to join the Army. Following is information abstracted from his military files.

Archie Hanks enlisted for the Army on November 19, 1901 at Mt. Vernon, Illinois. He was described as 5 foot 4 inches tall, blue eyes, dark brown hair and fair complexion. His legal guardian at the time was Ackland Hanks, his uncle. He was assigned as a Private in Troop L of the 1st Regiment of Cavalry. He died of Asiatic Cholera while stationed at Taal, Batangas Province, Philippine Islands on June 12, 1902. He was buried the same day at the Churchyard at Lemery "3 1/2 ft south of north wall - body buried in lime to prevent contagion". He had no personal effects except clothing and blankets which were destroyed by order of the Post Commander to prevent contagion. His service was listed as "Service Honest and Faithful."

At some unknown date his body was disinterred from the churchyard in the Philippines and was re-interred at San Francisco National Cemetery on 1Nov1904.
