Although Vernie was born in Dallas County, he had spent his lifetime in Laclede County. On November 3, 1930 he was united in marriage with Chloe Atchley and to this union were born two children. His wife preceded him in death in December of 1988. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Wanda Smith and her husband Shefford of Lebanon; a son, Gwnieth Smith also of Lebanon and a sister, Minnie Rhoads of Lebanon. Funeral services and interment in Mount Rose Memorial Park were under direction of Colonial Funeral Chapel.
