James was son of Benjamin A. Elliott and Mary Jane Hunter McClelland.

He married Ida Louise Rhea 1860-1961

One of their children was Dorothy Rosalynd Elliott born 14 August 1903 in Pennsylvania and died 8 Aug 1991 in San Diego, California. Rosalynd married Anselm Thomas Whelan who was born 6 July 1902 in McNeil, Holt County, Nebraska and died 3 July 1969 in San Diego, California.

Rosalynd married secondly Albert Ernest Bruton born 1904 died 1979.
