On 5 May 1898, Guthrie, Oklahoma Territory; Matthew Douthett, a resident of Guthrie, mustered as a Private in Troop D of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry. He was described as native of Kingston on Thames, England; single, 33 years old, 5 feet 9-1/2 inches, light complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and a hotel clerk. On 17 May, at a camp near San Antonio, Texas; he mustered again with the same description. From 8 June to 18 Aug, he was on detached service in the Quartermaster Department in Tampa, Florida. On 31 Aug, he was promoted to Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant per Regimental Order Number 15. On 15 Sep 1898, Camp Wikoff, Montauk Point, Long Island, New York; Matthew and his unit were mustered out of service. He was described as a resident of Denver, Colorado (Muster Papers).

In 1923, Matthew Douthett filed for his military pension in California. His unit history was listed as Troop D, 1st US Volunteer Cavalry and Quartermaster Sergeant 1st US Volunteer Cavalry (Pension Card).
